Cape Town race driver Charl Michael Visser made a surprise comeback to win Rotax Senior Max at his home karting National at Killarney on Saturday. Visser may have come, seen, and conquered, but it wasn’t all as easy as it seemed against the full  22-kart Rotax Senior Max grid on the day.

“With so many karts in the field, it was always going to be a challenge. Then qualifying never went very well in the wet,” Charl Michael explained. “So I lined up twelfth for the first heat and clearly had my work cut out! It was dry for the races so we worked on a good set-up. I made a good start, took care to keep out of trouble, but still pushed hard, and I was up to eighth at the end of the first lap.

“I picked a few more karts off from there and running third by lap three and second a lap later. But I had to fight for that for a few laps, so by the time I’d opened a small gap on the guy in third, the leader was too far gone. From there I just settled for the 32 points for second and concentrated on setting a quick lap for the second race grid. That put me second on the second race grid. 

“I felt we had a little more pace left in my chassis, so we dialled the kart in a bit further, I got ahead at the start and never looked back to win race 2 by quite a distance. I was on pole for the final and much the same, I got ahead and just controlled it from there to take the win and the day. 

“Thanks to my super team, my mechanics Zefrey and Bigshow for the prep on my kart, to Brad Liebenberg and Scotty for the all the help and to my dad and mom for all the support. Now it’s time to look ahead to my SATC SupaPolo appointment at Kyalami in a few weeks. Can’t wait!”
