All set for penultimate Investchem Formula 1600 round

Investchem Formula 1600 heads to Cape Town for the final time with the title poised on a knife’s edge between young lions, KC Ensor Smith and Jagger Robertson. With just ten points between them and four races to go over the final two rounds starting at Killarney International Raceway this 21 September Saturday, it’s not just all to play for, but the champion will have bragging rights to the final Investchem Formula 1600 crown this year before the South African National Single Seater steps up to the all-new MSA4 for 2025.

It's been a yo-yo season so far. Liqui Moly lad Robertson dominated earlier in the year, but he ran out of luck just as Ensor Smith found top form in his African Heating Mygale. The previous round at East London proved decisive when Jagger inadvertently tagged KC in the second heat and was put behind him in the results. Otherwise the gap may have been far tighter. So with 40 points plus a few bonuses still on the table, this one will certainly not be over ‘til that fat lady sings.

Behind them in the title race, Mint Wrapworks Killarney home hero Jason Coetzee will be back to defend what has now become a close third position after he missed the East London races to take care of karting commitments last time. While Jason remains within a  mathematical shot of the title, in reality he now has to fend the ever-improving Karabo Malemela and his KMFT Morita machine to deal with if he wants to end up third. Male-mela is meanwhile nowhere close from marking himself safe from an attack from either Investchem lad Siya Mankonkwana or Durban Production X driver Shrien Naidoo.

Never underestimate Investchem Formula 1600 veterans, Alex Vos’ DV Building Supplies Mygale, or Nicholas van Weely in his Magnificent Paints Mygale, local lad Storm Lanfear in his Mantellis car, or Ewan Holtzhausen’s Bee Tee entry. Rookies, NBR lad Mikel Bezuiden-hout and Renzo Ribeiro’s Metal Used machine will be keen to be back at a track they have already raced on. 15-year old newcomer Ndzalo Khoza’s makes his first Formula 1600 visit to Killarney in the Makaselaair Mygale, while young Liam Polome makes his debut in his Red Dot Mygale.

Investchem Formula 1600 will transform to the all-new MSA4 from 2025. Powered by a new turbo-litre Volkswagen 3-cylinder engine, the new cars are designed to deliver the safety and performance of latest specification international single seaters. The halo-equipped machines are however engineered to remain affordable to race locally. Mean-time, there’s a championship to win. So all eyes are on the KC & Jagger Show at Killarney this weekend…
