Volkswagen Motorsport heads to something completely different this Saturday 5 October, when it tackles the unique 2000 meter Zwartkops Top of the Hill Challenge in Pretoria.

“The Zwartkops Top of the Hill Challenge is a 2000 metre hill climb starting at turn 4 and running in the reverse direction of the track, all the way up to Turn 5 and the finish,” Mike Rowe, Volkswagen Head of Motorsport explains. “It has attracted a great entry, including our most interesting five-car Volkswagen Motorsport effort comprising Jonathan Mogotsi in the Hillclimb SupaPolo, and the four Volkswagen Rookies teamed up with four motoring journalists for the weekend.”

Mogotsi will drive the extremely rapid Blue Polo he raced with such success at the Simola Hillclimb. “Twisty Zwartkops is very well suited to my nimble front wheel drive Volkswagen Motorsport Hillclimb SupaPolo,” Jonathan points out. “Top of the Hill testing has shown the Hillclimb SupaPolo to be very fast on this tighter layout, which is also less reliant on top speed. So I’m looking forward to challenging some of the big, powerful cars for a top ten finish.”

 

“Volkswagen Motorsport would like to thank the Zwartkops organisers for including a special class for our Rookie Cup cars,” Mike Rowe added. “Our four Rookies will team up with four motoring journalists, but each in their own Volkswagen Motorsport Polo GT, so there will be eight cars running. The four Rookies will then draw a number out of a hat after practice, and team up with that journalist for the competition.”

The media members include Maroela Media’s Brendon Staniforth, Jacob Moshokoa from cars.co.za, Isolezwe’s Fanele Bhengu and Rebaneilwe Semakane of Reba S on Cars. The Zwartkops Top of the Hill Challenge starts with practice Friday, before qualifying heats and then the all-important finals from 13h30 Saturday.
