Close racing, great action in WP Max round

The first warm Cape Town weekend of the year welcomed the seventh round Rotax Max Challenge Western Province regional karting championship races to the Killarney Kart track for a cracking day of racing on Saturday.

Jason Coetzee returned home in dominant form as he sped to a triple premier Rotax DD2 gearbox class win over Ethan Stier and Matthew Wadeley, with Rafe Tayler in pursuit after regular frontrunner Joseph Oelz suffered a weekend to forget. Jared Jordan was another to go unbeaten in Rotax DD2 Masters as he sped to a triple win over Conor Hughes, Marco Viegas, Michael Jordan, Jonathan Wiehan, Aidan Hughes and Andrew Thomas.

The best races of the day were however three fraught Senior and Junior Max races. Three second places were good enough for Tate Bishop to sneak the overall Rotax Senior win for the day after SupaCup rival Charl Visser won two heats and ended third in the third, and Luca Wehrli took race 2. Storm Lanfear ended fourth after a wild Senior day from Ethan Deacon and Jude Stuart.

Keagan Beaumont’s two second places were good enough to give him the Rotax high school Junior Max win for the day after he, second overall Jordon Wadeley and third lad Sebastiano Human shared out the wins. Nicholas Lennox, Matthew Carter and Anwill April were the best of the rest.

The primary school action saw Max Boshoff fight back to take the Rotax under-13 Mini Max day from opening race winner Zac Hindley. Kiyaan Reddi ended third from Ruan Lewis, Zac Boshoff and Zach McAuley. Michael O'Mahoney conversely won the first two races to take the day from under-11 Micro Max final heat winner Liam Wharton. Jayden vd Merwe followed from Yaqeen Gamieldien, Slater Smith, Ruhan Victor and the rest.

And last but not least, National Bambino champion Radhi Harris sped to a triple win over Caleb Lingeveldt, Aleena Doutie, Lehan Fourie, Ashlyn Beaumont and Emelee Adriaans.

There’s a Formula K Northern Regions Rotax Max round up next on Saturday 16 October, while the Western Province Final goes down on 12 November. Before that however, the South African National heads to Italy for the Rotax Max ‘Olympics of Karting’ Grand Finals in Naples from 20 to 26 October.
