Angel ahead as V8s thrill Killarney

Cape Town's V8 Masters delivered a couple of stunning races at Killarney on Saturday as series veteran Marcel Angel bounced back into contention to take a clean sweep for the day with pole position and two race wins as he also disrupted arch rival Fabio Tafani’s recent run of success.

Angel took Pole in his Autohaus Angel by three-tenths of a second over Richard Schreuder, who had Sean Moore and Pretoria driver Tafani all over his tail with another upcountry visitor Rui Campos (Campos Transport) happy to be next up after struggling in practice, while Mark Ridgway and Rob Warrington shared the third row.

Silver class pole man Charl van Sittert (Serr Synergy), Brian Evans (Cape Eye Laser), Mike Brooks and Rhoderick Simpson were next on the grid ahead of the returning Fanie Theron and Masters ‘rookies’ Alister Brown and Andrew Strike, all of them driving identical Mustang-like Ford V8-powered APV347is.

The first race was initially abandoned as the red flags flew after one of the Supercars that race behind the Masters crashed, but after the re-start, it was Angel who led away, soaking up the pressure from Moore, with Tafani in hot pursuit after passing Schreuder on the opening lap. Shreuder initially had a charged-up Rui Campos to deal with but Rui later dropped back and had to deal with the attentions of Ridgway.

Angel had to hold off a concerted effort by Moore toward the finish, with just three-tenths between them at the flag, as Tafani came in third from Schreuder, Campos and Ridgway with Silver Class winner Charl van Sittert a little further adrift as he held off Class A runners Evans, Warrington and Brooks in rapid succession with Class B men Simpson and Theron next up after Strike was rendered hors de combat on lap 4.

Race 2 was an even closer race as old rivals Angel and Tafani fought it out, although Fabio was unable to get by Marcel with just a tenth of a second between them at the post and helped by another red flag ending the race a couple of laps early. Campos maintained a watching brief as he held Schreuder off for third ahead of Mark Ridgway, Evans and Brooks, with van Sittert eighth at the head of the Silver field again, with Moore, Warrington and second Silver man Simpson next up after Strike hit trouble again and Brown did not start.

Angel took the day overall in the end from Tafani, Schreuder, Campos and Ridgway, while van Sittert took Silver honours from Simpson and Theron as the V8 Masters prepare to pack their bags and the transporter, and set off for their away race at Kyalami’s Festival of Motoring V8 Racing Spectacular in two weeks time.
