Luca heads to Max World Kart Finals

14-year old Sunward Park kart racer Luca Munaretto is about to embark on perhaps the biggest weekend of his life as he heads for the Rotax Max DD2 Kart Grand Finals in Napoli, Italy October 18-23. The CBC Boksburg grade 8 scholar earned his seat in the super exclusive race by finishing a fine second in the recent African Open championships at Zwartkops after making a brave switch to the bigger open age group gearbox earlier in the year.

“My long time mentor and a former Rotax Max world champion, Wesleigh Orr advised me to step up to the DD2 class earlier in the year,” Luca, who moved to the class at a very young age admitted. “It was a gamble that paid off beautifully, because now I’m looking forward to competing in what is effectively the Rotax DD2 World Championships!

“The Rotax Max Grand Final is very fair for all competitors — only the leading Max karters — the class champions and runners up of all the various national championships — are invited to race and we are each given an identical chassis, we can only use a certain number of a specific tyre and we draw our engine for the weekend out of a hat,” Luca explained. “We all race with the same equipment, so it all comes down to pure driver ability in the end — I really can’t wait!”
