Historic Racing South Africa stars at Zwartkops’ Passion of Speed

Historic Racing South Africa’s opening Sports, GT and Saloon Car race was among the jewels in the crown of the weekend’s Zwartkops Passion for Speed Races, while the HRSA Charlies SuperSpar Pursuit Series entertained as always.

PE visitor Rudolf de Vos’ thundering Basil van Rooyen tribute Chevy Can-Am played a cat and mouse game with Rui Campos’ nimble Martini-liveried Porsche 911 RSR as the two dived through the slower traffic late in the Sports, GT and Saloon race.

The monstrously powerful Class B V8 Chevy was however able to use its point and squirt advantage to greater effect to fend off the charging Class A Porsche for a thrilling victory.

Class B second man Peter Bailey was next up in his Bailey Cars Porsche 911 ahead of Class D top two, Johann Smith’s JMS Mazda Capella and Jannie van Rooyen’s Volkswagen Scirocco. They beat Class C winner Deon van Vuuren’s Hoosier SupaQuik Mazda R100 to fourth and fifth overall.

Class D runners Mike O'Sullivan’s East Coast Chevy SS and Andre ten Napel TNMC Scirocco were next up ahead of Richard Pott’s A Porsche RSR and two more Class D men Rene Jansen van Rensburg’s SvTech Ford Escort and Sophos Pantazis‘ Datsun 240Z. Behind them Tony Lundin’s Silvergaurd Datsun 1200 Coupé took Class E victory over Riaan Roux’s Addfin Scirocco.

Wildcard Charl Smalberger’s Universal Alfa Romeo GTV upset the Class F applecart ahead of class regular Sean Hepburn’s Automobile Association Datsun 1200 Deluxe. Class E duo Werner Kotze’s Datsun 140Y and Steve Pickering in a Porsche 914 split them and Class F third and fourth men Cor Kraamwinkel‘s BMW 2002 and Willem Vonk’s Frog Ford Escort.

Class G winner Andy Gossman’s AllWagen Datsun Sunny and second man John Simpson’s Evoke Alfa GT Junior were next up, while Class F duo Riaan Jacobs’ Datsun 180 as George Smalberger’s Shield Ford Escort, Jan Jacobs’ Class G Olifantsfontein Alfa GT Junior closed off the runners.  Andre Dannhauser’s  Toyota, George Avvakoumides Porsche and Seef Fourie Jr’s Mazda R100 failed to finish.

The traffic treated de Vos better in race 2 as he was able to take full advantage of all that power to rumble off to an easy win over Campos, Bailey and a recovered Seef Fourie Jr’s Mazda. Richard Pott’s Porsche was next up from Class D men Johann Smith and Jannie van Rooyen, with C men Deon van Vuuren and George Avvakoumides next up.

D runners Mike O'Sullivan, Andre ten Napel, Rene Jansen van Rensburg, Sophos Pantazis were next up from Class E top two Riaan Roux, Tony Lundin and F winner Charl Smalberger. Steve Pickering followed ahead of Class F second and third men Willem Vonk and Sean Hepburn. And Andy Gossman beat John Simpson and Jan Jacobs to Class G honours with Riaan Jacobs next up as Ryan Budd’s Cortina, George Smalberger and Werner Kotze failed to finish.

Fines man Rob Clark and his wildly listing Sarel van der Merwe tribute Citroen GS 1220 Club made a victorious return to the Charlies SuperSpar Pursuit series. He benefited Bert van Aarle’s Mazda MX5 breaking out to take the first race win on Sunday. Modified Fines winner Wynand du Plessis Sr.’s Porsche 944 S2 ended second ahead of Trophy winner Riaan Roux’s Scirocco.

Modified Fines quartet Clive Winterstein’s Porsche 356, Althea Pretorius’ Nissan Exa, Andre Hattingh in a Mercedes Benz 190E and Willem van Niekerk’s Marauder followed with Tihan van Rooyen and Heinrich Norton’s Porsche 924 next up from Michelle Smith’s Nissan Skyline. Hendrik van Zyl’s Lotus  Elite, Lauren van Aarle’s Ford Escort and Gary Stacey’s Cortina joined van Aarle in the break-out sin bin.

Andre Hattingh and Wynand du Plessis Sr.’s Porsche 944 S2 made a late move on Althea Pretorius as they took a Modified Fines 1-2-3 over Trophy winner Riaan Roux and fines winner Rob Clark. Clive Winterstein was next up from Bert van Aarle, Heinrich Norton, Lauren van Aarle , Michelle Smith, Hendrik van Zyl and Tihan van Rooyen as Gary Stacey broke out again.

So Wynand du Plessis Sr. took the day from Rob Clark, Andre Hatting, Riaan Roux, Althea and Clive Winterstein. Du Plessis Sr won Modified Fines from Hatting and Althea Pretorius; Clark took the Fines win from Bert van Aarle and Hendrik van Zyl, and Riaan Roux took Trophy honours ahead of Heinrich Norton and Tihan van Rooyen.
