Volkswagen Motorsport’s Jonathan Mogotsi blew the South African SupaCup Championship wide open when he took a dominant double victory at the East London Grand Prix Circuit Extreme Festival on Saturday. Second in the chase, Mogotsi reduced his title leaderboard deficit from 19, to just six points with four races left to run in the championship, pending official MSA ratification. Rookie SupaCup teammate, Charl Michael Visser ended third on the day, while young Kyle Visser put it on pole position and drove a stellar race to fourth overall in the Border Astron Energy Polo Cup races. 

“Wow, that was an excellent day at the races!” Mike Rowe, Head of Volkswagen Motorsport admitted. “Jonathan Mogotsi put in a champion’s drive to dominate SupaCup as he cut his title deficit down to just a handful of points with four heats left to race. Charl Michael Visser fought hard and then played the team game to end third and stabilise his championship position, and Kyle Visser took a beautiful Astron Energy Polo Cup pole before a daring but impressive couple of races.” 

“That’s the way I like it!” a delighted Jonathan Mogotsi beamed. “We just missed pole, but from there on, my Volkswagen Motorsport SupaPolo was on rails and I was able to control the races from the front. Best of all is that I took some thirteen points out of my championship deficit. Now we are right in there with four races still to come. Thanks to my incredible team for the perfect car today. Now to finish it off in style – I cannot wait – bring it on!”

“I struggled a little in qualifying and that put me on the back foot for the first race, where I fought hard for fifth,” Charl Michael Visser owned up. “Fortunately I had good pace and was third on the second race grid and I quickly fought up to second. It was great to come home behind Jonathan in a team 1-2. My car was very good today, I am getting to grips with the finer points of SupaCup and look forward to the last part of the season with my great team behind me.”

“To put it on pole position and take the bonus point was a highlight of my career so far,” Volkswagen Motorsport’s Astron Energy Polo Cup rookie Kyle Visser explained. “I need to work a little harder on my one-lap Superpole pace, but the first race went very well and I finished third for the third time this season. The second race was going well, but I touched another car flat out in Potters Pass and that put me into a spin. Now that was scary! But I picked it up and chased home for fourth overall and best rookie again, so a very good day overall. I really cannot wait for my home track at Killarney next race!”

  

“East London was very good to Volkswagen Motorsport and I salute our three young drivers and excellent team on another job very well done,” Rowe concluded. “Now we head to the final four races starting at Killarney for what promises to be an epic climax to an incredible season. We will be ready!”
